Originating from France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, the tomettes (antique terracotta tiles) are sorted, cleaned, and calibrated, ready for installation. Each country and region has its specific tile based on the clay used. The tiles can be square, hexagonal, rectangular, black, red, pink, yellow, or white. The terracotta tiles are intended exclusively for indoor use.
A wide palette of colors exists, ranging from pale yellow or egg shell to dark red and black, including ochre, vermilion, and more. The most commonly used colors in Belgium and Northern France tend toward red and vermilion. We find some mixed lots (a blend of all colors in one piece, creating a remarkable rustic and antique effect). In Central France and the South, terracottas are often mixed. The trend is moving toward lighter tomettes, due to the sun, and larger sizes. Terracottas of dimensions 25/25, 30/30, etc., are almost exclusively used in the South.
Old terracottas (antique tomettes) provide an authentic effect, as their patina is unmatched. They come in all colors (light, beige, pinkish, flamed, vermilion, red in varying shades, etc.) Dimensions range from 14 to 16 centimeters, in square or rectangular shapes (for example, 11/22 cm) and thicknesses of 20 to 25 mm, sometimes 30 mm or even 35 mm. They can be arranged in squares of varying sizes, separated by bands of rectangular tomettes in a different color (checkerboard effect).
Advantages: Thickness. Patina. Rustic, antique appearance. Variety of tones. Ease of ordering.
